Disinformation and artificial intelligence – new threats to Bangladeshi democracy

The 2026 parliamentary elections were the first in Bangladesh’s history where AI-generated disinformation threats occurred on such a scale. The election commission detected tens of thousands of fake content pieces, a significant portion of which were violent in nature.

According to reports from Bangladesh’s Election Commission, approximately 86,000 AI-generated disinformation materials were identified during the pre-election period, of which nearly 36,000 were violent in nature. The main targets of disinformation campaigns were party leaders – Tarique Rahman (BNP) and Shafiqur Rahman (Jamaat-e-Islami). Research by Dismiss Lab showed that between mid-December 2025 and mid-January 2026, election-related misinformation increased by 41%.

This phenomenon poses a new challenge for young democracies where oversight and media institutions are relatively weak. BBC Bangla reported that AI-generated content could have a real impact on voting outcomes, particularly among less educated voters. The issue of regulating AI content in electoral contexts is becoming an urgent matter for the entire South Asian region.
