Bangladesh Victory Day (16 December)

Today Bangladesh celebrates the 49th anniversary of Victory Day. On this occasion, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina honoured the memory of all those who were fighting for the country’s freedom. As in previous years, she sent flowers, fruits and sweets to the Rehabilitation Centre for Martyrs and Wounded War Fighters for Freedom.

This is an extremely important day because it celebrates the success of the Bengal forces in overcoming the Pakistani army during the nine-month war for independence.

The battles took place in 1971. On 16 December General Amir Khan Abdullah Niazi and a Pakistani army of 93 000 soldiers surrendered in Dhaka after their defeat.

Bangladesh’s struggle for independence was one of the worst acts of genocide in human history. The war took more than three million lives with it, while millions were displaced and forced to leave the country.

To commemorate Victory Day, the Prime Minister said in her message that Bangladesh is a country for all, a country of common harmony and that government will not let divisions and anarchy be created in the name of religion. The population of the country should move towards prosperity, progress and development, maintaining high morale.

The flag of Bangladesh will today be hoisted on the mast of all government buildings throughout the country.

The Presidium of the Chamber has sent Her Excellency the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Warsaw our kindest wishes on another anniversary of Victory Day of 16 December.
