There is a growing movement in Bangladesh demanding the death penalty for rapists

The social organization Muktijuddho Mancha recently organized an exhibition of documents that describe the problem of rape in the buildings of Dhaka University. Members of the Muktijuddho Mancha are involved in human rights protection. As part of the organized demonstrations, lectures and exhibitions, they demand that the death penalty for rapists be sanctioned in the Bangladeshi legal system. The demand itself is an interesting issue for lawyers and social activists, since, in the generally accepted views, the death penalty itself is considered fundamentally contrary to the principle of respect for human rights.

According to information collected by Muktijuddho Mancha on the basis of monitoring of the Bangladeshi media, in November 2020, 40 students of madras (Muslim religious schools) were raped by their teachers. As a result of the injuries, 3 victims died and one committed suicide.

Members of Muktijuddho Mancha claim that many of their compatriots are not even aware that rape or sexual harassment does not only concern female children. Boys are equally vulnerable. They also emphasize the low public awareness of the need to educate and warn their children in order to protect them from harassment. In addition to changing the law, the organization appeals to the government of the Bangladeshi People’s Republic of Bangladesh to create a special office to fight against sexual harassment of children.
