South Asia is one of the regions of the world that is most affected by climate change. Without large-scale, comprehensive adaptation actions, all countries in this region will be exposed to huge financial losses.
This can only be prevented by cooperation, which will enable it to survive and develop under difficult conditions.
In order to create a comprehensive cooperation programme, a virtual meeting of the Global Adaptation Centre (GCA) was held on 26 November 2020. It was organised to define the strategic policy and finalise the work programme of the GCA Regional Office for South Asia, which is located in Dhaka.
The event was attended by various development partners such as the World Bank, United Nations Development Programme and Japan International Cooperation Agency. They presented recommendations for the complex work programme of the GCA Dhaka office.
During the meeting, a speech by the Bangladeshi Minister of Foreign Affairs took place. This position is held by Dr AK Abdul Momen. The Minister emphasised the importance of cooperation between the countries of South Asia in implementing adaptation measures in the region. Dr Momen appreciated the support of South Asian countries for the creation of the GCA regional office in Dhaka.
At the beginning of the last decade Bangladesh was classified as one of the most vulnerable countries on the list of the Climate Change Vulnerability Index, which measures the level of risk and severity of climate change impacts.
It has been confirmed that the people of Bangladesh should be afraid of the lack of water resulting in drought and hunger. It is estimated that, in the near future, around 200 000 people per year will have to escape from the Bangladeshi coastline because of the effects of climate change – salinisation of the soil and rising water levels.
That is why it is so important to develop a common strategy that provides a guarantee of security.
