On 22 September 2020, a general debate on the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly took place at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Due to the pandemic, world leaders did not have the opportunity to make personal statements. During the session, previously recorded speeches were played.
One of them was prepared by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who focused on emphasizing the need for a “strong global partnership” in digital cooperation for future generations of Bangladeshi citizens.
“We look forward to forging a strong global partnership on digital cooperation to achieve our common goals” – She said during a virtual event.
The Prime Minister mentioned that the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the strength of digital services and also pointed out a digital divide. “About half the world’s population has no access to the Internet. We must close this gap,” she said.
During the speech, we were informed that the Bangladeshi government is implementing the “Digital Bangladesh” project, which is expected to last until 2021.
“The total number of Internet users was 103.48 million. Digitization gives people great opportunities to become creators of change,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina points out that the government’s focus on digital connectivity has facilitated economic development and has become a catalyst for social change, including the empowerment of women.
“By 2041 we intend to transform Bangladesh into an advanced economic nation, we want to put our young generation at the center of this transformational journey,” she continued.
Therefore, the Prime Minister made a commitment to create digital academies and centers in each high school by 2030 – to open up young people to the emerging labor markets led by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
